About Me

I write novels, eat dark chocolate, raise three children, love my husband, scrub toilets, ignore the laundry, and love a good story, but hardly ever in that order.

Girls in the Know: 31 Bits

When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Firefighter? Mail girl? Astrophysicist?

I wanted to be a singer, but I couldn't say the word very well, so I would say I wanted to be a "seener." And I would wear pink turtlenecks and sing along to records, because I am that old.
My mom wanted to be a librarian. She even majored in it for a week in college until she found out she had to learn the Dewey Decimal System and couldn't just sit all day, reading books. Dang.

I asked Thea recently what she wants to be when she grows up and she said, in this order, "A rock star, an orthodontist, a mom and a veterinarian." She paused as the weight of these aspirations sank in and added, "I'm going to have very busy days."

My mom and dad never laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a "seener." Okay, maybe my dad laughed and then imitated me mercilessly. But he completely made up for it because he indoctrinated me into believing I could do anything. Doctor, lawyer, seener, even track star. Ahem.

Through my dear friend, Makila, I have found a group of very talented peeps helping to make little girl dreams come true. Dreams of self-sufficiency, independence, education, creativity. Have you heard of 31 Bits?
Spirited, creative, intelligent women in our country found spirited, creative, intelligent women in Uganda, and they formed a partnership. They sell beautiful, fresh, I-want-one-of-those jewelry, and you can buy it here. Or you can host a party and encourage others to buy.
Or you can enter my drawing to get your bad self started on the journey to spring cuteness.

Here's what I'm giving away:
I'm committing to this in writing because I really want to keep this and wear it every day of my life.

It's easy to enter. Just tell me what you wanted to be when you grew up. Leave your comment below, message me on this Facebook page or on this Facebook page. I'll draw for a winner Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at high noon. Winner will post Thursday.

Shop 31 Bits. Be cute. And help an all-grown-up woman living across the world grab hold of a little-girl dream that still takes her breath away.

  3. When I was a little girl I loved to play house or school so often dreamed of being a Mommy or a teacher. I also wanted to be Laura from Little House on the Prairie. Actually, I wanted to be a million different things when I was little, I had a very active imagination. My little brother on the other hand wanted to be a "garbage truck" or a "fire truck" when he grew up. It's clear I had the better imagination :p

  5. I hadn't heard of 31 Bits before. Thanks for getting the word out! I wish I had more noble aspirations when I was kid, but I just wanted to be Princess Leia when I grew up.

  8. Did I miss the drawing? Maybe you meant May 1?? Either way, my 'dreams' for life are drastically different from when I was a kid. Ok, maybe not all that different, I'm still doing one. When I was a kid... all I wanted to do was make people laugh. Laughter cures all, right? So I'm still doing that but now my dream is to be a nurse. I really want to help people. Make them feel better. I guess I can be a laughing nurse! :)

    1. You did not miss the drawing, Stacia. You just happen to be the only one of us that's wide awake.

      Yes. MAY 1. Sorry. ;)

  9. That bracelet is gorgeous! I wanted to be a teacher for awhile, then in middle school I switched to accountant and that's what I became!

  10. Ahhhhhh - let's try this again!

Lawyer. I wanted to be a lawyer and argue myself silly. This has not worked out in educational forms though I argue with my kids all the time. And lose.

Also - you remind me of Megan Hilty. She's so gorgeous and is a seener - with a sparkle in her eyes of humor and intelligence that reminds me of you. Your doppelganger for sure.

Thanks for the fun posts. You're great!

  11. I don't have a memory of what I wanted to be. Is that pathetic or what?!?! Probably too busy telling people I was not Brooke all the time to dream. Can I still enter?

  12. I wanted to be a marketing intern for a widely successful author. But before that, I wanted to be a newscaster. Then I realized I would have to work in radio first...and what fun is it if no one can see your face?! At least I have accomplished one of my dreams :)

  13. How bizarre, I was sure I already posted this once... Anyway, so I don't really remember what I wanted to be either. I remember what my brother wanted to be at some point - a "motercycle man", and that didn't really pan out, at all. I might have wanted to be a librarian, for the same reason as your mom. Or a pianist. Never would have guessed about the organist part though!

  14. I wanted to be a lawyer for a while - until I realized it might involve speaking in front of people, and reading incredibly boring documents all day long. Mostly I was good at arguing in circles, which is why my mom thought I had potential in the legal world. :-)

  15. I wanted to play volleyball for the US Volleyball Team and an opera singer. Crazy to think I am a former teacher and now a stay-at-home mom.

  16. I wanted to be Anne of Green Gables (Megan Follows was SO much better at it than I), a secretary on TV, and have a rich husband, all such noble aspirations, don't you think? I did become a secretary, but not on TV. I loved watching Anne of Green Gables, and I'm still waiting for the rich husband (not really)!
You were great on Saturday. You made me laugh, you made me cry, and your husband is a cutie.
